As much as we love the conflict and adventure that takes place on The Vampire Diaries, it’s the relationship drama in Mystic Falls that really has us hooked. Basically, the town is a hotbed of complicated romances, which is understandable given how absurdly attractive its residents are. Click through our roundup of TVD’s barrage of love triangles.
Stefan, Katherine, and Damon
The love triangle that started it all. When Katherine came into Stefan and Damon’s lives, she quickly stole both of their hearts before facilitating their transformation into vampires. Naturally, the uber sexy brothers weren’t happy to be sharing a girlfriend, and their bitterness began a century-long feud.
Damon, Stefan, and Elena
History repeats itself. Stefan’s chance encounter with Elena led him to return permanently to Mystic Falls, followed shortly by Damon, who was hoping to stir up some trouble. Surprisingly, falling for Elena temporarily put their feud on hold. The two brothers learned to work together by fighting to protect her from a series of supernatural dangers. Basically, Elena is the luckiest girl in the world. Who cares that an original wants her dead? She has the sexiest vampire brothers everon her side.
Caroline, Matt, Elena, and Stefan
In the early stages of Elena and Stefan’s romance, Damon wasn’t the only one rooting against them. Elena’s ex-boyfriend, Matt, saw his hopes to win her back dashed by Stefan, the “new” guy in town. His friendship with Caroline took his mind off things, but when she began to fall for him, his obvious affection for Elena made her insecure. Luckily, they were able to work through it, leaving us with two happy couples ... for a while anyway.
Jeremy, Vicki, and Tyler
While Elena and Matt were struggling to redefine their relationship, their siblings were doing the same, but with a different outcome. Jeremy proved that nice guys don’t always finish last when he managed to convince Vicki that she should be with him instead of her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Tyler. Sadly, their happy ending didn’t last long: after Damon turned her into a vampire, Stefan had to stake her.
Luka, Bonnie, and Jeremy
Jeremy seems to have a thing for older women. He found himself developing feelings for Bonnie, who understandably was wary about dating her best friend’s younger brother. As she resisted her growing feelings from Jeremy, she became intrigued by Luka, a new warlock in town who has mysterious motives. Bonnie’s heart is still undecided on this geometrical tangle.
Tyler, Caroline, and Matt
Matt and Caroline’s relationship status switched to complicated when Katherine turned her into a vampire. Unable to tell Matt the truth and wanting to protect him, Caroline pushed him away. She began to establish a strong bond with Tyler as she helped him through his own supernatural transformation. Two smooches later, one from each contender, Caroline half-chose Matt. But she may not end up with either now that he is picking up on the fact that she’d hiding something from him and Tyler is getting friendly with vampire-hating werewolves.
John, Jenna, Alaric, and Isobel
As if deciding between two vampires weren’t complicated enough, Elena discovered that she was adopted. Her biological parents are the man she thought was her uncle, Jonathan Gilbert, and Isobel, a vampire. Coincidentally, Isobel used to be married to Alaric, Jenna’s new beau. Further entangling their lives is the fact that Jenna and Jonathan have a romantic history of their own.
